Abstract

An aluminium alcoholate is prepared by heating to reflux temperature a mixture of aluminium and a wet alcohol having less than 5 carbon atoms, the reaction being carried out in the presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride and a known catalyst for the formation of lower alkyl alcoholates. Specified catalysts are mercury and mercury salts, e.g. mercuric acetate. Excess alcohol is preferably used. Concentrations of AlCl3 of about 0.3 to 2.0% by weight of the alcohol are specified. The suitable alcohols are those which have not been pretreated to remove moisture. The alcoholates may be recovered e.g. by cooling or distilling.
