Abstract
Ethylbenzene is prepared by heating a mixture of benzene, ethylene, and anhydrous hydrogen fluoride to a temperature substantially above atmospheric for sufficient time to give a substantial yield of ethylbenzene, and separating the same from the product. Preferred temperatures are 150-300 DEG C. Pressure may be atmospheric but is desirably 100-600 lbs./sq. in. and reaction time at least 2 hours. The molar ratio of benzene to ethylene is kept high, the optimum conditions being a ratio of ethylene : benzene : hydrogen fluoride of 1 : 3.6 : 3, a temperature of about 165 DEG C., and pressure of 500 lbs./sq. in.
