Abstract
Norbornylene (bicyclo- (2 : 2 : 1)-2-heptene) or its methyl derivative is prepared by reacting ethylene with a mixture of cyclopentadiene or methylcyclopentadiene and its dimer, the temperature being controlled by the relative proportions of monomer and dimer, the heat loss from the endothermic cracking of the dimer and the heat gain from the exothermic reaction of monomer and ethylene cancelling one another out. Liquid phase reaction with dissolved ethylene is preferred, employing a temperature of 150-250 DEG C. and a pressure of 500-10,000 p.s.i.g. Norbornylene is recovered from the product using two fractionating towers, the first tower yielding cyclodiene monomer contaminated with norbornylene as an overhead (which overhead may be returned to the reaction), norbornylene contaminated with monomer as a side stream and cyclodiene dimer as bottoms. The side stream is separated from cyclodiene monomer in the second tower. Commercial mixtures of cyclo- and methylcyclo-pentadienes may be used; methylnorbornylene separated from norbornylene may be recovered as product or cracked to obtain pure methylcyclopentadiene.
