Abstract
Olefines boiling between 425 DEG and 650 DEG F. are prepared by disproportionation of a normally liquid olefine boiling below 425 DEG F. and composed predominantly of propylene tetramers by contacting with a phosphorus compound polymerization catalyst at a temperature between 175 DEG and 325 DEG F. The catalyst is preferably phosphoric acid of a concentration equivalent to 110-120% ortho-phosphoric acid but may also be an acid film catalyst (film of phosphoric acid on an inert non-porous support such as quartz), a "solid phosphoric acid" or a metal pyrophosphate. The feed may contain some propylene trimers. Liquid phase operation is preferred and the pressure should therefore be sufficient to maintain the reactants n the liquid phase. Space velocities should be above 0.01 vol./vol./hr. In an example, a mixture of 35 parts by weight of C9 olefines and 65 parts of C12 olefines are agitated with 116% phosphoric acid at 225 DEG F. The reaction is carried out continuously at a space velocity of 1 vol./vol./hr., and the effluent allowed to settle, the acid layer being recycled. The hydrocarbon product contains 25.2 parts of C9, 46.8 parts of C12, and 28 parts of C15 + olefinic product over 95% of which boils in the range 425-650 DEG F.
