Abstract

4,41-Bipyridyl is separated from a mixture of isomeric bipyridyls containing it by treating said mixture with water and thereafter separating the 4,41-bipyridyl hydrate at a temperature below about 60 DEG C. The mixture of isomeric bipyridyls may be produced from metal-pyridine interaction products, for example by oxidation. The separated hydrate may be subsequently converted to 4,41-bipyridyl, for example, by heating to above 60 DEG C. or by heating under reduced pressure. The 4,41-bipyridyl may be subsequently quaternized with, for example, methyl sulphate or methyl chloride. Examples are given.
