Abstract

A method for continuously purifying acetone by alkali treatment while avoiding the use of moving parts, and subsequent distillation comprises treating the crude acetone in a fine dispersion in countercurrent with dilute aqueous alkaline lye in a concentration of approximately 15-30% by weight at about 40-90 DEG C. whilst ensuring that the fine dispersion of the acetone is maintained, water being added continuously or from time to time to the lye or the acetone in a quantity corresponding to the quantity of water contained in the acetone withdrawn, and separating the acetone from the lye and distilling it. A packed tower or one with other baffling systems such as perforated trays may be used to maintain the fine dispersion. The acetone may be introduced at right angles to the current of lye, if desired in several streams. The temperature and pressure are preferably maintained such that the acetone gently boils in the upper part of the washer, acetone being returned as reflux in a reflux ratio of about 1 : 2-5. A pressure of about 0.5 to about 2 atmospheres is advantageous.
