Abstract

The invention comprises chlorhydroxyquinoline consisting of 57-74% by weight of 5,7-dichlor-8-hydroxyquinoline, 23-40% 5-monochlor-8-hydroxyquinoline, and 0-3% 7-monochlor-8-hydroxyquinoline; and its preparation by the action of sulphuryl chloride on 8-hydroxyquinoline in glacial acetic acid at a temperature no greater than the reflux temperature, and separation of the product. It is preferred to use a weight of sulphuryl chloride 1 1/4 to 3 times that of 8-hydroxyquinoline, to effect chlorination at 35-60 DEG C., for example agitating over 3/4 -3 hours, to arrest reaction by rapid cooling by, for example, running into distilled water, and finally to effect separation of the product by reducing the acidity, for example to pH 6 with ammonia, followed by centrifuging and washing. The defined mixture has unexpected biological activity.ALSO:A chlorhydroxyquinoline mixture consisting of 57-74% by weight of 5,7-dichlor-8-hydroxyquinoline, 23-40% 5-monochlor-8-hydroxyquinoline and 0-3% 7-monochlor-8-hydroxyquinoline has antibacterial, antiamoebic and antifungal activity. Oral administration is mentioned.
