Abstract
Isoprene containing less than 2% of its weight of cyclopentadiene is purified by reacting with at least 1 mol of maleic anhydride per mol of cyclopentadiene at less than 50 DEG C. and separating the adduct formed. The isoprene may be concentrated, e.g. containing 95%-99% by weight or in dilute solution containing 10%-20% by weight of isoprene. The maleic amhydride is added in solution, e.g. in benzene or acetone containing 20%-30% by weight of the anhydride, or by passing the isoprene through a bed of solid maleic anhydride at a temperature sufficient to dissolve the required amount, e.g. 25 DEG C.-40 DEG C. After sufficient time to form the adduct this is removed by washing with aqueous alkali and water or by distillation. The process preferably reduces the cyclopentadiene concentration to below 20 p.p.m.
