Abstract

Acid washed naphthalene is further purified by distilling in the presence of at least 0,1% by weight of an alkali metal hydroxide. The naphthalene preferably has a setting point of at least 79,5 DEG C. having been purified by sulphuric acid washing or treatment with formaldehyde and sulphuric acid. The caustic alkali, preferably used in amounts of 0,3-2%, may be used as finely divided solid or 10-30% aqueous solution. In the examples, 1,000 parts of naphthalene are distilled, 5 parts being removed at 90% reflux and the main fraction of 880 parts at 50% reflux.ALSO:Acid washed naphthalene is further purified by distilling in the presence of at least 0.1% by weight of an alkali metal hydroxide. The naphthalene preferably has a setting point of at least 79.5 DEG C. having been purified by sulphuric acid washing treatment with formaldehyde and sulphuric acid. The caustic alkali, preferably used in amounts of 0.3%-2%, may be used as finely divided solid or 10%-30% aqueous solution. In the examples, 1,000 parts of naphthalene are distilled, 5 parts being removed at 90% reflux and the main fraction of 880 parts at 50% reflux.
