Abstract

Secondary alcohols containing less than 5 carbon atoms per molecule, particularly isopropyl alcohol, are separated from a reaction mixture obtained by the absorption of the corresponding alkenes in aqueous sulphuric acid by a process comprising flash vaporizing the reaction mixture by introducing it tangentially, together with steam, into a flash vessel, at such a rate that the wall of the flash vessel is entirely or almost entirely moistened. The flash vessel is preferably cylindrical and preferably also tapers conically towards the bottom. Preferably the process is used in conjunction with the process disclosed in Specification 715,483 in which sulphuric acid obtained from the stripping zone is recycled, without concentration but with dilution, if necessary, to the absorption zone.
