Abstract
Chloromelamines containing 3 to 6 chlorine atoms per molecule are prepared by passing gaseous chlorine into an aqueous suspension of melamine at 10-20 DEG C. until the required amount of chlorine has been absorbed, the amount of water used being greater than fifteen times the weight of melamine used and such that the concentration of hydrochloric acid in the reaction mixture at the end of chlorination is less than 1N. Part of the residual water after removal of the product may be used in treatment of a further batch of melamine, or the HCl may be removed from the water, e.g. by deionisation, and all or part re-used.
