Abstract
Lattice bound iron is removed from spodumene in a process that comprises treating finely divided a - or b -spodumene with chlorine gas at a temperature of from 954 DEG to 1204 DEG C. to reduce the lattice bound iron content to less than 0.3% calculated as Fe2O3. A substantial proportion of free magnetic iron compounds in the spodumene (amphibole, triphyllite and chloride) may be removed by magnetic separation prior to treatment with chlorine. Quantities of free iron compounds or minerals may be removed by a vibratory treatment after chlorination, and further magnetic tretment may be performed. If the spodumene starting material is in the a -form, then the temperature should be above 982 DEG C. to convert the a -form into the b -form since the iron in the b -form is directly attacked by the chlorine. The chlorine may be present as up to 5%, preferably 10-50% by volume of a chlorinating mixture of air and chlorine, and the iron chloride may be separated from the gaseous products by condensation.
