Abstract

Aluminium-oxide-containing substances are reacted to give aluminium chloride. In a first process step, the aluminium oxide-containing material is activated by heating to 350-900 DEG C until the residual water content is between 0.5 and 10% by weight, based on Al2O3, and the specific inner area of the Al2O3 having a strongly perturbed crystal structure is between 10 and 450 m<2>/g of Al2O3. In a second process step, the activated aluminium oxide is reacted at 350-800 DEG C with a chlorinating and reducing gas or gas mixture to form aluminium chloride which is obtained by condensation.
