Abstract

A process for decomposition of chlorinated hydrocarbon residues with recovery of HCl comprises atomizing the residues, containing not more than 75% by weight Cl, into a combustion furnace at 600 DEG C. at least; burning in enough O2 or air to obviate soot formation while steam or water is introduced into the furnace, in amount at least half the Cl content of the residues by weight, to avoid evolution of Cl2 gas; and absorbing the HCl in water or dilute hydrochloric acid. The residues may be atomized by means of O2 and/or air and/or steam, and the steam or water may be introduced into the furnace in admixture with air for combustion. Residues which contain more than 75% Cl may be diluted before decomposition with chlorine-free hydrocarbons or hydrocarbons which contain less chlorine. Apparatus for carrying out the process of the invention is described.
