Abstract

To produce translucent vitreous silica, a charge of quartz sand before introduction to a refractory metal melting furnace vessel, is subjected to a series of cleaning treatments comprising at least screening, washing, a flotation process and magnetic separation. The series may also include acid leaching, grinding the sand and/or a high-temperature gas treatment. The vitreous silica is drawn from the furnace vessel through a die or a die and mandrel assembly to form rod or tube.
