Abstract

<PICT:0923495/III/1> Apparatus comprising a crucible of refractory material having an aperture 9 in its base, a tubular container 5 below the crucible, heating means, e.g. induction coils 11 associated with the crucible and means for maintaining a protective atmosphere in the crucible and in the space between the crucible and the mouth of the tubular container, is used for making silicon ingots. The crucible and container may be located within an outer shield 3 of inverted bell shape. Container 5 may be supported in the lower shield position 4 by a plug 7, e.g. of quartz wool. The means for maintaining a protective atmosphere may comprise a crucible cover 12 having a pipe 13 through which an inert gas, e.g. argon is introduced. Apertures in the wall of the crucible may permit escape of inert gas to the vicinity of the mouth of container 5.
