Abstract

<PICT:1091848/C6-C7/1> An expendable sampling device for taking samples of molten metal, comprises an evacuated vessel 30 capable of admitting molten metal therein when the temperature at an end 34 is lower than the melting point of the vessel, the latter being surrounded by a heat insulating material 38 within a tube 24 adapted to be held by a supporting member. The vessel 30 may be made from a vitreous or ceramic material such as quartz, and is closed at one end by a button 34 of a material having a lower melting point than that of the vessel; the vessel is lined or coated with aluminium before it is evacuated and sealed at the end 32. After insertion of the vessel into the tube 2, which may be of cardboard, the tube is surrounded with the heat insulating material 38; a further coating of insulating material may be formed around the outside of the cardboard tube and a cap 40 for protecting the end of the vessel is secured to the tube. In operation, in order to permit the insertion of the sampling device into a container of molten metal, the end of the cardboard tube is inserted over the end 18 of the support member (12 Fig. 1) having a handle (16); the tube may be connected to the member 12 by a bayonet-type joint. Upon insertion of the device into the molten metal, after a short interval the cap 40 and button 34 melts thereby allowing the metal to enter the vessel.
