Abstract

<PICT:0802247/III/1> A gas sampling probe comprises means to heat at least part of the sample intake tube in order to prevent condensation and the formation of deposits in the tube. As shown, the intake tube 1 is provided with a sealed jacket 10 containing a fluid; the part of the jacket 10 below the level W is within the furnace or flue containing the gas being sampled and so the fluid in the jacket is heated by this gas and transfers heat to the part of the tube 1 outside the furnace of flue, by convection, conduction, or change in state of the fluid. The fluid in the jacket may be water, mercury, or a gas; the jacket may be evacuated to lower the boiling point of the fluid. Reference is made to the provision of a heating chamber within the intake tube 1 and to electrical heating of the tube. A filter 9 of porous carborundum is attached to the end of tube 1. The connection between the tube 1 and the take-off tube 4 provides a trap to prevent liquid which condenses in tube 4 from passing into tube 1.
