Abstract
272,092. Levinsohn, S. S. Oct. 28, 1926. Gas analysis. - Apparatus suitable for the analysis of combustible and flue gases comprises a filter 25, absorption vessels 12, a gas-measuring tube 1, means for leading the gas through a heated tube 11 for combustion and for cooling it subsequently, the apparatus being connected by a pipe 19 and three-way cocks 18, 20, 21. The filtering material is contained in an enlargement of the tube 25, through the side of which passes an inlet pipe dipping into water at the bottom of the filter. Into the upper end of the filter is fitted a three-wav tube, the two other branches of which lead to a suction bellows or the like and to the distributing tube 19. Each of these branches, or only the one leading to the bellows, contains a valve of the bicycle-tyre type, so that before a new sample is drawn into the apparatus the filter and tubes leading to the flue &c. can be flushed out with the gas to be analyzed by working the bellows &c. The measuring tube 1 opens at its upper end into a capillary 2 having one branch leading directly to the atmosphere through a cock 3 and another branch leading to the three-way cock 20 so that the sample can be drawn in through the tube 19 by lowering the level vessel 4, or forced into one of the absorption vessels 12 and drawn back again, or, after admixture of oxygen or air for combustion, passed to and fro through the heated tube 11 connecting the measuring tube 1 with a narrow bell 6 surrounding it. Projections on the bell space it apart from an outer tube 7 for the reception of the liquid expelled from the bell by the gas sample and serving also to cool the gas. At their lower ends the measuring tube 1 and outer tube 7 are ccned so as to clamp between them the end of the flexible tube leading to the level vessel 4. A benzine burner 33 is employed for heating the tube 11. Each absorption vessel comprises an upper chamber having an open extension 12a depending into a lower chamber 12b and constricted at intervals to promote admixture of the liquid with the gas, which enters by way of a tube 16 and displaces the liquid from the upper chamber into a rubber bag 17. When the gas is to be withdrawn again, the three-way cock 21 is turned so that the gas is conveyed by a tube 13, flared at its lower end and, if a foaming reagent is used, provided with a small pocket to form a trap. The handles of the threeway cocks 21 are milled at their edges and provided with grooves to indicate the direction of flow. The parts of the apparatus are held by clips attached to a bar of rectangular section, the combustion tube 11 being, however, mounted in rubber plugs in a wooden block 40. A wooden box enclosing the apparatus has a front board which, when lowered for access to the apparatus, also serves as a desk.
