Abstract
<PICT:0490817/III/1> In a method of testing oil for the rate of oxygen absorption comprising submitting an oil impregnated test piece and an associated thermometer in a closed chamber to a current of heated air and recording the rise in temperature in the test piece within a given time, the current of heated air is caused to flow around and past the test piece at an even temperature and velocity. The test may be carried out in apparatus comprising a water or air jacketed chamber 2, an air inlet 13, and an air outlet 19 adapted to be heated by steam or heated air from the jacket 3. Preferably air from the inlet first enters a subsidiary air chamber 12 before passing through an opening 14 into chamber 2, and passes through an opening 16 into a second subsidiary chamber 18 before passing to the outlet. The test piece 6 may be enclosed in a porous bag 11 and be supported by pendent legs 5 with inturned ends. To adapt the apparatus for use in differing atmospheric conditions, the outlet tube may be made telescopic or outlet tubes of different sizes be provided for interchangement. Various parts of the apparatus may be jacketed with heat insulation and the heating be controlled automatically by a thermostat, pressure gauge, or like means. The air chamber and outlet tube may be electrically heated, if desired.
