Abstract
Apparatus for casting silicon comprises a silica melting-vessel 1 containing a silica siphon tube 5 whose longer limb projects into a subjacent vertical tubular silica mould 6 which is closed at its base by, e.g. a Ta cap, and encased in an annular jacket 8 of heat-insulating material, e.g. quartz fibre, which tapers downwards at its outer surface. Electromagnetic heating employing work coil 4 is preferably used. The internal surface of mould 6 is preferably coated with carbon black. The whole apparatus is mounted in a gas-tight <PICT:0954849/C1/1> enclosure which may be flushed with inert gas, e.g. argon. The cast Si rod freezes in the mould from the base upwards and after withdrawal from the mould may be acid-etched with HNO3 + HF to remove carbon.
