Abstract
978,420. Crucible furnaces. V. G. YOUNG. Sept. 12, 1962 [Oct. 18, 1961], No. 37397/61. Heading F4B. [Also in Division H5] An electrical resistance furnace includes a crucible 1, an element shield 2 of tubular form arranged with its axis vertical around crucible 1 and carrying externally heating elements 7 in a cavity 5 between shield 2 and surrounding heat insulation 4, the inside dimension of shield 2 being greater than the outside dimension of crucible 1 so that either may be removed from the furnace, by withdrawing it upwardly independently of the other. Heating elements 7 are carried on insulators 6 on the outside of shield 2 which is of a non-corrosive heat resisting nickel-chrome alloy. The top of cavity 5 is covered by a flange 2a on shield 2 and high temperature bricks 8. On top of the furnace is a cover 15 comprising an inner part 15a, removal of which enables crucible 1 to be removed and an outer part 15b removal of which enables sleeve 2 to be removed. Crucible 1 rests on high temperature brick 11. The leads (not shown) from resistance elements 7 pass through conduit 9 to a terminal box 10. Insulation 4 is moulded in outer steel casing 3. An outlet 12 is provided for split molten metal preferably closed by a fusible seal 13 above a tray 14.
