Abstract

In a process for extracting iron from iron silicate or iron ores containing silica, in which iron oxide is reduced to iron, the starting material is first subjected to treatment consisting in heating a finely divided mixture of the starting material with a base-forming material such as a compound of calcium or magnesium, the said treatment taking place in an oxidising atmosphere at temperatures above 750 DEG C. and below the temperature at which the pores of the sinter thus produced become substantially closed by melting, for example, about 1300 DEG C. Thus, the silica of the starting material combines with the base-forming compound yielding a silicate and a sinter is formed in which the iron is present as maghemite and magnetite.ALSO:A process of extracting iron from iron silicates, or iron ores containing silica, in which the iron oxide is reduced to iron after the starting material has first been subjected to a treatment consisting in heating a finely divided mixture of the starting material with a base forming material such as a compound of lime or magnesium, the said treatment, which is effected before the step of magnetic separation where such is employed, taking place in an oxidising atmosphere at temperatures above 750 DEG C. and below the temperature at which the pores of the sinter thus produced become substantially closed by melting, with the result that the silica of the starting material combines with the base forming compound yielding a silicate, and forming a sinter in which the iron is present as oxide. Preheating is preferably carried out at a temperature of about 1300 DEG C.
