Abstract

A method of producing iron comprises introducing sponge iron into a kiln and heating it to such a temperature that the iron reaches the stage of incipient fusion but there is no melting of the gangue. The sponge iron may be sufficiently carburized and the melting-point thus lowered that the iron may form balls and the hot material may then be added to a refining furnace. Some fluxing material or a carbonaceous material may be added to the sponge iron before heating.
