Abstract
Iron ore is reduced in the presence of a solid reducing agent and, if desired, a flux, the ore being first reduced in a reducing zone of the furnace to metal sponge and thereafter converted in a nodulizing zone of the furnace at a higher temperature into metal nodules, at least the ore and preferably the whole of the charge being dried and preheated to several hundred degrees centigrade, e.g. 300 to 400 DEG C., prior to its introduction into the furnace. Both the sensible heat of the waste gases, which are at over 500 DEG C. and preferably between 600 and 900 DEG C., and any available CO therein, may be used to preheat combustion air to 350 DEG C. or for steam raising.
