Abstract

High grade iron-ore concentrates containing at least 60% of iron are ground to a size analysis in which at least 70% is below 60 m and not more than 10% is over 250 m before forming into pellets which are used in the green unburnt state for controlling the temperature in a steel-making furnace. Alternatively 5-20% of the ore may be reduced to an analysis in which at least 90% is below 40 m and not more than 5% is over 60 m , and then mixed with the bulk of the ore having 30-65% below 60 m . A proportion of flue dust may be added to the concentrates; a binder, preferably slaked lime, may also be used, in which case the degree of size reduction necessary may be less. Other binders referred to are bentonite, fuller's earth and montmorillonite. The pellets are preferably dried by exhaust gases or hot air before use.ALSO:In the refining of steel, particularly in a converter, the temperature is controlled by the introduction of high-grade iron-ore concentrates in the form of green unburnt pellets. The pellets may also contain a proportion of flue dust, and may be formed with a binder such as slaked lime. They may be dried by waste furnace gases or by hot air before use.
