Abstract
Prior to smelting, finely divided haematite iron ore is mixed with a bonding medium and then pressed into porous briquettes which withstand the pressures of the smelting furnace, whilst permitting easy access to reducing gases. The preferred bonding agent includes a finely divided calcium compound which forms calcium ferrites with the iron ore. The ferrites provide additional bonding for the briquettes which dissociate at high temperatures and enable exothermic reduction of ferric oxide to take place. A specified briquette mix before pressing contains foamed slag, slaked lime, silica sand, haematite and water.ALSO:The invention provides a briquette for charging into a blast furnace in the production of iron, comprising finely ground haematite ore fines and a hard, porous cement matrix distributed evenly throughout the fines and intimately associated therewith, said matrix being composed of hydrated lime, and a foamed blast furnace slag/hydrated lime cementitious product. The free lime content reacts with the ferric oxide of the ore fines in the initial heating period to form calcium ferrites of the typa XCaO.Fe2O3 which preserve the briquette against disintegration until a high temperature in the furnace is reached under which condition there exists the optimum reducing system. Silica sand may be added to the mix from which briquettes are made.
