'[Also in Division C7] In a process for the gaseous reduction of iron ore the off-gas is,removed, mixed with a gaseous hydrocarbon and reformed by passage through a high temperature catalyst bed before being fed back to the furnace as the reduction gas without the removal of water vapour therefrom. In Fig 1 the ore is reduced in shaft furnace 10 into which hot reducing gases are fed through bustle and tuyene system 22, the off-gas is removed through pipe 24, whence it flows to cooler scrubber 60 and a major portion thereof to compressor 62 The compressed gas,is mixed, in mixer 68, with gaseous hydrcarbon admitted by valve 65 in response to gas analyser-controller 47 and the mixture fed to reforming -furnace 38 where it is catalytically reformed to a mixture of CO and H 2 which is fed to the feed system 22. Some of the gas from cooler scrubber 60 may be mixed with the reformed gas prior to feeding it to the furnace in order to cool the latter. The reduction may also be effected in conveyer, or fluidized bed furnaces. In a preferred form of the reformer furnace (Fig. 2) non-catalytic refractory lump 94 (e.g. fused Al 2 O 3 , MgO, SiO 2 or Cr 2 O 3 ) is used to preheat the gas mixture and the catalyst bed 98 is preferably of tabular Al 2 O 3 impregnated with 5-10% Ni.
