Abstract
<PICT:1104553/C6-C7/1> Pre-reduced solid iron products, e.g. pellets or powder containing 85 or 95% metallic iron, are heated by hot gases recovered from the conversion refining of pig iron in at least two successive stages during each of which a part of the Co contained in the gases, which are passed counterflow through the products, is burnt by the controlled feed of air without re-oxidizing the products. For example, gases escaping from a steelworks converter 2 may be at a temperature of 1600 DEG C. and contain by volume 15% CO2 and 85% CO, giving a ratio of % CO2: (% CO2 + % CO) of 0.15. The pre-reduced pellets may be heated to 700 DEG C. in the first stage, where the above ratio is 0.4, and to 1130 DEG C. in the second stage, where the above ratio is 0.25, inside a horizontal rotary or shaft furnace heater 1, the gases being burnt in each stage by controlled injection of N2-enriched air.
