Abstract
Raw wood is passed together with a parallel flow of hot air through a rotary kiln where dry distillation occurs, aided by partial combustion of the volatile products. The resultant charcoal and hot gases pass to a second rotary kiln connected to the outlet end of the first kiln, iron ore and if necessary fluxing additions also being charged to the second kiln together with more hot air for combustion of the gases. Sponge iron is withdrawn from the second kiln, while if any effluent gases remain unburnt further hot air is added. The gases then pass through a heat exchanger where their heat is transferred to the incoming air flow. In a modification, distillation and reduction are carried out in separate zones of the same kiln.
