Magnesite, dolomite or lime is subjected to a thermal treatment, e.g. at 1000-1670‹ C. to the point of deacidification (of magnesite, dolomite or lime) or sintering (of magnesite or dolomite) by conducting the material in the form of dust or fine granules, in counter-current with hot gas produced in a combustion chamber, through a plurality of centrifugal separators connected in series with or parallel to one another or in series/parallel arrangement relative to the flow of gas and/or the material drawn through the separators, the separators being adapted as required to be selectively connected in the said series, parallel or series/parallel arrangement by means of adjustable valves and by-pass pipes by which the material may be caused to by-pass one or more of the separators. The hot gas may be produced in an oil heated combustion chamber or a plurality of connected chambers and part of the gas drawn through the separators may be returned to the combustion chamber(s). Incompletely burnt gas may be produced in the combustion chamber and air required for complete combustion may be introduced into the gas flow at a point before or after the gas has passed through one or more of the separators. The material to be heat treated may be dried in a stream of hot gases which convey it to the separators. The residual heat in the treated material may be used to supply heat to air or other gas entering the combustion chamber. The material may be homogenized in a reaction container after the heat treatment. As shown in Fig. 2, air preheated by reaction product at 10 is passed into oil heated combustion chambers 1<SP>1</SP> and thence via cyclones 2-5 to dust extraction plant 6 where the product is recovered and passed to collecting chamber 9 and preheater 10. Combustion gases are withdrawn through the cyclones and dust extractor by means of fan 13 and partly recycled to the effluent from the combustion chambers in line 14. Material to be treated is supplied at 21 and first is dried in conduit 15. By means of valves 24, 26 and by-pass lines 25, 28 the material may be passed to line 14, line 14<SP>1</SP> or to the collector 9.
