Abstract
A process for annealing white iron castings comprises packing the castings in a mixture of iron ore and a granular refractory material which is inert to the ore and the casting. The mixture may comprise one part of ore to more than four parts of crushed waste firebrick or crushed chromite, magnetite, chrome-magnetite or high alumina slag, and the heating may be between 1025 DEG and 1100 DEG C. for at least 1 1/2 days. The resulting partially reduced ore may be separated magnetically and the sponge iron used for other purposes.
