Abstract
In a process for decreasing the carbon content of hypereutectic iron, low carbon iron, e.g. steel or wrought iron, in a finely divided and at least in part oxidized state is added to the molten iron issuing from a furnace, the low carbon iron being melted by the heat produced by the reaction of the oxygen in the low carbon iron with the carbon in the hypereutectic iron. The content of silicon in the hypereutectic iron may also be reduced. The low carbon iron may be superficially oxidized by heating in an oxidizing atmosphere. Scale or granular or powdery iron ores may also be added. The additions may be made in the launder or into the ladle during pouring and may be made continuously or intermittently. A predetermined amount of oxygen may also be blown into the melt.
