Extracting.-In a process for producing molten iron or steel directly from the ore and controlling its sulphur content, a mixture of ore, carbon, and fluxing materials is heated in a reverberatory furnace until the ore was reduced. The temperature of the furnace was then maintained at such a value that the carburization of the reduced metal proceeds at such a rate that oxidation of the metal is prevented and the iron oxide content of the slag is maintained sufficiently low so as not to prevent the removal of the sulphur from the metal. If, for example, the furnace is being operated at 1600‹ C. with a neutral slag, the carbon content of the charge is increased; if the furnace is being operated at 1500‹ C. with a neutral slag the temperature is increased to about 1600‹ C. With a strongly acid slag the basicity of the slag-forming material is increased. Specification 315,760 is referred to.
