Abstract

Thin-walled castings of iron containing no carbides in the as-cast state, and having its graphite present in flake form, are made from metal containing less than 0.4% of manganese and less than 0.05% of sulphur, to which a siliconcontaining material has been added to produce a total silicon content of 2.5-3.2%. Sulphur may be reduced by any known means, preferably by treatment with calcium carbide, while carbon may also be added to the metal before, during or after the desulphurization and silicon addition.
