Abstract

The method of refining metal in a metallurgical furnace disclosed in the parent Specification includes the additional steps of introducing hot metal into the bath before the charge contained therein is uniformly heated and passing oxygen through the tubular conduit during at least part of the refining time. An open hearth furnace with conventional end burners is used and one or more of the tubular conduits extend through the roof, being supplied with oxygen and fuel initially and with oxygen only before and after the hot metal addition during part or the whole of the refining time.
