Abstract

Metal is melted in a crucible by an electrically heated cloche furnace which slides over the crucible and has a lip forming a gas tight joint with the rim of the crucible. The cloche permits the entry of additions or testing means into the crucible and rests on a refractory bed-plate. The atmosphere inside the crucible may be controlled, and a solid pedestal is provided for the crucible within the cloche.
