Abstract

A solid and/or liquid charge of metal in an upright converter and in process of conversion to steel by blowing with oxygen-rich gas is heated by combustion of a gas, preferably natural gas, the heating step being carried out separately in time from the refining step. The method may be used to melt an initial charge of scrap.
