Abstract

In the production of steel from a solid charge, such as scrap or pig-iron, a part of the charge is melted, preferably in a hot-blast cupola, while the remainder is heated till it becomes pasty, either in the refining vessel or a separate heating vessel, by blowing with a burning mixture of oxygen-containing gas, which may be air, and a fuel such as oil, coke or gas. The two parts of the charge are then combined, with the addition of necessary slag-forming ingredients and the charge heated to refining temperature by further blowing with the oxygen-fuel mixture, after which the bath is refined by top-blowing with oxygen. Heating may also be continued during the refining step, the heating gases being supplied separately from the refining gas. Cracking gases or oils may also be supplied during refining, but remote from the zone of impingement of the oxygen stream, whereby the carbon content of the bath may be increased.
