Abstract

962,171. Preheating furnace charges. A. SCHACK, [trading as REKUPERATOR KOMM. - GES. DR-ING. SCHACK & CO.]. Oct. 27, 1960 [Nov. 14, 1959], No. 37028/60. Heading F4B. Scrap metal is fed to a melting furnace over a series of platforms in a preheating chamber heated by exhaust gases from burners in the melting chamber. The material is introduced through an opening 3 or a door 5 on to a platform 6 and is thence transferred over platforms 8 and 10 through the preheating chamber 1 to a melting hearth 12 by rams 7, 9 and 11. On the melting hearth it is directly heated by the burners 13, and the liquid metal thus formed accumulates in a bath 14. Overheating of the material in the preheating chamber is prevented by a construction 16 which reduces thermal radiation from the melting chamber 2, and by the provision of nozzles 17 through which cooling air may be introduced. The exhaust gases are withdrawn through openings 19 for passage to a recuperator from which cooled gases may be recirculated via the nozzles 17 to provide a non-oxidizing atmosphere. As a further precaution against overheating, openings 18 are provided through which exhaust gases may be withdrawn and passed direct to the recuperator.
