Abstract

Molten iron is refined by oxygen and/or air in a tiltable open hearth furnace having two working chambers A and B alternately used for refining and preheating, connected by a stationary throat 1 containing a reversible entraining nozzle 13 drawing gases from the refining chamber to be burnt in the preheating chamber. The nozzle is operated on cold or preheated air, steam or a fuel gas e.g. natural gas. Oxygen lances 8a, 8b are respectively and retractably mounted in fixed flues 2a, 2b.
