Abstract

916,763. Steel manufacture. YAWATA IRON & STEEL CO. Ltd. April 17, 1959 [April 17, 1958; May 12, 1958], No. 13252/59. Class 72. [Also in Group XII] Steel is refined in a process comprising blowing oxygen from main and auxiliary nozzles 9, 10 in the arched roof of each of two abutting furnace chambers having a communicating passage controlled by a valve 8 through their common side, the oxygen being alternately introduced on to a molten charge 14 in one chamber, and the combustible gases thus produced passing into the adjacent chamber and burned therein to heat and melt a charge. The nozzles 9, 10 are directed vertically on to and inclined relative to the surface of the charge, respectively, the nozzles 10 being mounted at each end of the chambers. The combustible gases produced by the oxygen may contain between 80 and 90% of carbon monoxide, and the gases passing from one chamber to another by suction induced through flues 2, 17 at each side of the furnace by a common stack (not shown).
