Abstract

752,555. Reduction of iron ores. KANAMORI, K., and YAWATA SEITETSU KABUSHIKI KAISHA. Jan. 4, 1954 [Aug. 10, 1953], No. 172/54. Class 72. The temperature of molten pig iron in the hearth of a blast furnace is controlled by forcing water in the liquid phase and under pressure directly into the liquid metal. As shown, a downwardly inclined tuyere 2 has a tube 3 passing through it into the liquid metal 4 in the hearth of a blast furnace 1. Water under pressure in a tank 5 is fed into the tube 3 and at the same time a gas, e.g. oxygen, nitrogen or carbon dioxide or a mixture thereof, may be passed through the tube. A carbon tube having a closed end in the molten metal and an open end outside the furnace may be used to obtain the metal temperature by the use of a pyrometer, Fig. 2 (not shown). By control of the oxygen in the gas-water mixture, oxidisable impurities, e.g. chromium, in the metal may be removed.
