Abstract

Gas obtained from that zone of a slagging producer which is at about 1000 DEG C., the producer being blown with a mixture of free and combined oxygen e.g. steam or carbon dioxide, is introduced into the hearth of a blast furnace. The pressure at which the gas is withdrawn from the producer is preferably that at which it is blown into the furnace, this pressure being controlled by controlling the pressure of the gas entering the producer. The slagging producer may be used to remelt and refine pig-iron, or to produce alloys such as ferromanganese or ferrosilicon.
