Abstract
Nitrogen trihalide, e.g. NCl3, present in gaseous or liquid chlorine is decomposed by contact with an alloy comprising a major proportion of a mixture of copper and nickel. The preferred alloy contains 60-70% wt. Ni, 25-35% wt. Cu and optionally minor proportions of other elements, e.g. 1-3% Fe, 0.25-2% Mn, 0.02-1.5% Si and 0.3-0.5% C, e.g. "Monel Metal" (Registered Trade Mark). The alloy may be in the form of granular turnings or coarse powder. The Br2 content of the Cl2 may be lowered to below 100 p.p.m. before contact with the alloy. The contact time may be not less than 0.5 second. The process may be conducted at ambient temperature. The alloy may be regenerated by washing with water then drying.
