Abstract

A method of producing a substantially non-porous, austenitic stainless steel consisting essentially of weight percent 10 to 30% chromium, 15 to 45% manganese, 0.85 to 3% nitrogen, up to 1% carbon, up to 2% silicon, the rest being essentially iron and residues; comprising the phases consisting of: preparing a mixture containing 10 to 30% chromium, 15 to 45% manganese, up to 1% carbon and up to 2% silicon; alloying the mixture at an ambient pressure of about one atmosphere; with nitrogen in an amount of 0.85 to 3%; balance the elements according to the following equations: ** (See formula) ** and solidify the mixture.
