Abstract
A process for purifying a graphite body containing metallic impurities comprises heating said body in the presence of a chlorinated hydrocarbon having a boiling point above about 200 DEG C. to a temperature sufficiently high to form and volatilize chlorides of said impurities. A number of suitable chlorinated hydrocarbons are specified. Alkali-metal chlorides, alkaline-earth metal chlorides and mixtures thereof assist the purification, and gaseous agents which are substantially inert with respect to graphite under the obtaining conditions, e.g. nitrogen or argon, may be used to sweep the metallic chlorides out of the reaction zone.
