Abstract
Alkali metal thiocyanates are produced by reacting sulphur with alkali metal cyanide at 100-110 DEG C. in an aqueous solution of the alkali metal thiocyanate of such concentration as to have a boiling point of at least 110 DEG C. A 50 per cent solution of the thiocyanate containing a dispersing agent, e.g. sodium alkylated naphthalene sulphonate, is heated to 100-110 DEG C. and successive additions of cyanide and sulphur are made thereto, with stirring. The sulphur should always be in excess. Water should be added to maintain the original thiocyanate concentration. The resulting mixture may be diluted with water and filtered to remove excess sulphur. When anhydrous potassium or lithium thiocyanates are being prepared the filtered liquor is evaporated to a boiling point 135-145 DEG C. and cooled to room temperature to crystallize the salt. When anhydrous sodium thiocyanate is being prepared the filtered liquor is evaporated to a boiling point 140-150 DEG C. and cooled to above 30 DEG C., e.g. 50-60 DEG C. to crystallize.
