Abstract

Cobalt compounds in pure form are prepared from solutions of cobalt sulphate, chloride, or nitrate contaminated with nickel and/or iron and/or copper, each of which may be present in an amount up to 1% by weight of the cobalt, by maintaining the solution at 15 DEG to 65 DEG C., adding a sequestering agent selected from the class of polyaminocarboxylic acids and their alkali-metal salts, and thereafter precipitating or crystallizing out the cobalt compound. The amount of sequestering agent employed is approximately 40 times the combined weight of the nickel, iron, and copper, but may be varied depending on how pure the final cobalt compound is to be. The preferred sequestering agent is ethylenediamine-tetra acetic acid and its alkali-metal salts. The cobalt may be precipitated as the carbonate by adding sodium carbonate or as the hydroxide by adding calcium or sodium hydroxide.
