Abstract
1-Alkynes are prepared by continuously feeding a 1,2-dihaloalkane or a 1- or 2-mono-haloalkene into a boiling solution of an alkali metal alkoxide of an alcohol boiling above 100 DEG C. in an alcohol boiling above 100 DEG C. and substantially above the boiling point of the 1-alkyne, at a rate such that the temperature of the solution is not substantially lowered during the addition and separating the alkyne from the vapours released from the solution. These vapours are preferably led up a reflux condenser maintained at a temperature above the boiling point of the alkyne, but below that of the alcoholic solvent and of unreacted or partially dehydrohalogenated starting material which are thereby condensed and returned to the reaction. The alkoxide may be obtained by dissolving an alkali metal hydroxide in the alcohol boiling above 100 DEG C. In examples, sodium hydroxide is dissolved in ethoxyethanol in a reactor heated to 170 DEG C. and provided with a reflux condenser whereupon there is added dropwise (1) 1,2-dibromo- or dichloropropane yielding propyne and some allene; (2) 1,2-dibromobutane yielding 1-butyne.
